Rapper Dancing

This is a traditional form of sword dancing, originating in County Durham and Northumberland. The dance is performed by a team of five dancers each carrying a piece of tempered steel,  28'' in length with a wooden handle a each end. These are called 'rappers'.

The dancers proceed to perform a range of fast paced figures, often involving twisting the rappers in to tight knots above their heads.

Clog Dancing

Clog dancing is a form of percussive step dancing, performed with wooden soled shoes called clogs. Clog dancing was popular in Northumberland, Co. Durham, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire, with distinctive styles developing in the different regions.

Popular tune types for clog dancing are Hornpipes, Waltzes, Jigs and Reels. It is often performed solo or in groups, with competitions still being held in Morpeth (Northumberland) in the spring, and Pendle (Lancashire) in the autumn.

Music

The musical traditions of the North East are some of the richest in the country. We perform live music for our dance displays, as well as for concerts and dances. All of our members are skilled musicians - with many being professionals and/or champions - and play a range of traditional instruments including Fiddle, Melodeon and Pipes.
